Get Smart: Anne Boleyn

Introducing the first of another ongoing series!

I believe that the general dumbing-down of movies, TV, music et al is part of a vast conspiracy to create a population of ignorant, robotic underlings who will self-destruct and allow the GOP to achieve world domination.

That being said, this new series will provide you with a chance to experience the things you loved in recent releases by watching incredible, classic, older movies-- back when they were...better.

If you liked: The Other Boleyn Girl
You should watch: Anne of The Thousand Days

Common Elements: The more-or-less true story of Anne Boleyn's rise to power by her seduction of King Henry VIII.

What Makes The Old One Better: Gorgeous, more realistic costumes. Incredible acting from an all-star cast. Attention to detail. Less of a focus on gratuitous sex and more of a focus on the political and social implications of their love affair.

Rent it.

  2. so you think movies and tv shows are lowering their standards to make us more simple minded?

    i have to disagree.

tv: if you compare the inner workings of earlier tv with that soup, junk and explosions you might find today- the intellectual properties have only risen. fine-tuned target audiences, selective airing time- in some cases even viewer driven progression.
if you think the caliber or intelligence behind whatever tv show you watch is lowered, maybe your not being the viewer they targeted. with your complaint about showtime's weeds... it's not about the enthicity of someone who has been forced to deal drugs. it's a menagerie of heroic flaws and devined ironies.

movies: business makes cents. blockbusters like titanic, star wars and hell's angels are not low brow-depending on who you ask- and summer hits like american pie and how to lose a guy in ten days aren't hitchcock masterpieces- but they have their scripted merits. ever much more than tv shows, movies have not only targeted audiences, but they have targets seasons, subcultures, and population demographics i couldn't begin to imagine a producer would come up with. the movies that make or break over opening weekend are likely the ones you refer to, but the ones that only get shown in select theaters and aren't advertised get sullied by such a remark. an imperfect test to show that movies- err lets call them films- are just as smart, witty or otherwise educating by light of the hollywood heavyweights taking small roles and low paying gigs to be in a production about queen victoria or king lear.
